München - 5 months later
It’s been officially summer for almost a week now so I decided to finish where I left off - with Munich. I also visited a few other areas in and around Bavaria, including Salzburg and the concentration camp at Dachau. It was a very busy two weeks and Christophe did a great job as tour guide. Some highlights -
- Munich was freezing. As in, very, very cold. It put a damper on the sightseeing just a little bit but I will admit the snow and mountains were very pretty. My favorite was when we went skiing about an hour outside Munich. The clouds and mountains and landscape were unbelievably beautiful. My skiing skills next to the Blancs who have lived in Munich their whole lives, however, not so much.
- Neuschwanstein Castle was an eerie kind of pretty. Surrounded by dense fog and snow-covered trees it reminded me a lot of Hogwarts. We also had amazing food at this little local place near the center of the town! No idea of the name though.
- The Hofbrauhaus - This is one of Munich’s famous beer halls. It’s noisy and crowded and has live music too. We met up with some AU kids here and drank huge mugs of beer. I got to try some Radler, which was a delicious combination of lemonade and beer!
- Nymphenburg Palace - This palace was located within the city limits and was gorgeous. We didn’t go inside, but the outside grounds were filled with people playing winter sports and swans and ducks swimming in half frozen lakes. We were also planning on going to the Botanical Garden right next to Nymphenburg but it closes really early in winter so make sure you look up the times before you go!
- New Year’s Eve was fireworks. Everywhere. I thought someone was going to get hit by a firework there were so many going off. The entire sky was filled with lights and people all went outside to see the show. It was definitely different from any New Year’s Eve I have experienced in the US.
Pictures to follow!
